My lovely Baines cousin, Elsie, has met up with another Baines family member over in England and just told me that my great-grandmother Alice Baines went to Winckley Square Convent School in Preston before she went to America in 1911.
You can see what remains of the school here:
On a very interesting note, you will see that if you tour Winckley Square on the above website, you will read mention of a Paul Catterall and his brother Peter Catterall. I am wondering what connection these gentleman have to my ancestor Margaret J Catterall, who married Henry “Harry” Baines. Their son James Baines was Alice’s father.
The men were members of the Winckley Club.
You can read about the Winckley Club (and the Square) at Google Books.
Thank you, Elsie!!
The Abraham Baines family is shown below in the 1851 Census for England, in Preston, Lancashire.
Abraham Baines is the grandfather of James Baines and great grandfather to Alice Baines Ellison.
Note on the census his son Henry, James’s father, is 15 years old and is a joiner. It looks like the next word indicates in cupboards. Joiners were carpenters.
Abraham, spelled Abram on the census, is a labourer, discharger, on the River Ribble. His son James, 17, is doing this also. Thomas’s occupation is listed as corn warehouseman.
The River Ribble is the only river rising in Yorkshire that flows westward and empties into the Irish Sea. A large Viking silver hoard was found on the river banks, near Preston, in 1840.
Here are some pictures I found of the River Ribble:
My great-grandmother Alice Baines Ellison was the daughter of James Baines and Elizabeth Ellen Livesey both of Preston, Lancashire, England. Alice immigrated to America in1911 with her parents. She was their only child.
Elizabeth Ellen Livesey was the daughter of Reuben Livesey and Alice Prince. The picture below was taken in 1937. I do not know who the Shaw’s were. Do you?
Uncle “Jack” John Livesey was born circa 1879. Was Aunt Agnes his wife? Or now Mrs. Shaw? Margaret Livesey took the photo. Was she Uncle Jack’s wife?
