This is St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rathfriland, County Down, Northern Ireland where John & Mary Carroll baptized their daughter Bridget, my great-grandmother, in 1867. Other children baptized there include: Catherine (1865), Thomas (1869), and Mary Ann (1871).
Here is the view from the church:
John Carroll was married to Mary Ferrigan on 20 SEP 1860 at the Church of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church of Clonduff Parish in Hilltown, County Down, Northern Ireland.
Here is the interior and exterior of the church as it looked in 2018:
My Carroll Family were in Leitrim then Clough then Sheeptown in County Down. Baptismal records show Rathfriland also. And John Carroll and Mary Ferrigan were married in Hilltown at the Roman Catholic church in 1860. I am not sure which church.
Can you help identify the people in the photos?
John Carroll Jr’s wife was named Bridget. They were buried in Newry.
From Grandma: “John came to Detroit many years ago but his family, outside of his son Pat (Packy), stayed in Ireland. John had gone home often and after staying 3 months would always return to Detroit. There were four children: Maryann O’Hanlon, Patrick, Katie.” Grandma did not list number four. John’s sister, Bridget Carroll Butler, lived in Detroit along with all of her children. They moved to Detroit in the 1920’s from Iowa.

John Carroll died in 1890 and is purported to be buried in the Catholic church cemetery in Killeavy, Armagh. There is a Lower Killeavy Chapel in the village of Cloghogue. My grandmother, Bridget Carroll Butler’s daughter, visited this grave on a trip to Ireland in the 1970’s. My grandmother told me that Mary Carroll insisted on the burial being in this spot despite the problem it caused with transportation of the deceased.
After John’s death, Mary Ferrigan Carroll immigrated to the United States to join some of her children in Iowa. On the 1910 US Census, Mary reported that she immigrated in 1891 and was 70 years old. She was living in Cedar Rapids, Linn, Iowa at the time with her son, Peter J Carroll, aged 30.
Here is a list of Mary Ferrigan & John Carroll’s children that can be found on familysearch.org and the children’s exact birth dates and locations:
Note that on Catherine Margaret’s information John is listed as being born in Cloghogue, Newry, Down.
