Mary Maria Ellison Dawson

10 Nov

Thanks to Heather Bathe and family, we have photographs of Mary Maria Ellison and her first husband James Dawson of Cleveland, Ohio.

Mary Maria often went by the name “Marion.” She was named Mary Maria after her grandmother Mary Maria Ambler Ellison. The Ambler’s were an important family in Baildon, Yorkshire.

She was born in Baildon, Yorkshire, England on September 10, 1839 to Walker Ellison and his wife Margaret (Cooper). Walker and Margaret had only one other child — Benjamin Walker Ellison. In 1848, Margaret and her second husband, William Hudson immigrated to America. At the time, they had two more children: Annie and Emma.

Marion had four children with James Dawson: Anna Maria (Heather’s line), William Walker Ellison, Lillie, and Florence Susan. After James died in 1884, Marion married Enoch Kimball Robinson in 1893 and moved to Boyne Falls, Michigan, where her brother lived. Enoch was the first husband of Marion’s younger sister Annie, who died in 1892 in Boyne Valley Township. Enoch died in 1902 and Marion married again – to Arthur E. Martin. Marion died on the 25th of November 1909 in Boyne City, Michigan.

Thank you again to Heather Bathe for sharing these wonderful photographs.

Anna Maria Dawson’s Family of Cleveland, Ohio

25 Sep

Anna Maria Dawson was the first born child of Mary Maria Ellison and James J. Dawson. Mary Maria Ellison was the only full-sibling of my 3rd great grandfather Benjamin Walker Ellison.

Anna was born 16 SEP 1859 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States and died 29 DEC 1936 in Brooklyn, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. She married Roelof Ralph Krist on 12 FEB 1890 in Cleveland, Ohio. They had three children: Ruby F., Esther, and Timothy. I do not think Timothy ever married.

I have found Ruby’s marriage record: Ruby married William M. Fain on 26 NOV 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio. Ruby’s Birth ~ 15 AUG 1891 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio and Death ~ March 1973 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA

James Dawson Family 1870 US Census

15 Sep

Here is James Dawson and family on the 1870 US Census.

James, Marion, Anna M (13), Wm (11), Lillie A (6), and Florence (2). This is the only instance I’ve found with Lillie A being listed. She is not on James’s Will and so must have died before 1884.

The Census came from familysearch.org but does not come up on ancestry.com.

Marian Ellison Martin’s Obituary

17 Feb

GONE TO HER REWARD
Mrs. A. E. Martin Died at Her Home on Thanksgiving Day
(26 Nov 1909 – Boyne Citizen)

Transcribed by Donna Cromwell

Died at her home on Division street , Thursday afternoon at 2:30. Mrs. A. E. MARTIN, aged 70 years; 2 months and 15 days. Mrs. Martin was taken sick about six weeks ago the trouble starting with a cold which developed into pneumonia followed by quick consumption, owing to her advanced age, was unable to withstand the attacks of the disease and succumbed to her infirmities after five weeks of terrible suffering. She leaves besides her stricken husband three children, Mrs. Florence Ross of this city, Wm E. Dawson and Mrs. Ralph Krist of Cleveland , Ohio , and one brother Walker Ellison of Boyne Falls . The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Rea officiating. Undertaker Stackers will have charge of the obsequies, and interment will be in this city.

Marian Maria Ellison was born Sept. 10, 1839 in London , England . At the age of seven she came with her parents to this country, the family going to West Virginia to make for themselves a home in the wilderness. From West Virginia the Ellisons journeyed to Cleveland Ohio , where in the year 1846 [sic] the subject of this sketch was married to James Dawson. Mr. and Mrs. Dawson lived for many years in Cleveland , and it was there that the four children were born, one of whom, Lilly, passed to the great beyond in tender years. After Mr. Dawson’s death his widow married Mr. E. K. Robinson of Boyne Falls , and came to that village, where for many years she lived, honored and respected by the whole community. The death of Mr. Robinson occurred seven years ago at Boyne Falls , and Mrs. Robinson came to this city to make her home. She built a small house next to that of her daughter, Mrs. Ross, on Terrace Street , and lived there for four years, brightening and cheering the lives of everyone with whom her quiet life brought her in contact.

On the 20th of June 1906, she was married again in the evening of her life to A. E. Martin, and for these three years, Mr. and Mrs. Martin have lived together in harmony, and love, cheering for each other the downward path of life’s journey.

Mrs. Martin was up to the time of coming to Boyne City a member of the Free-Will Baptist denomination. Shortly after her removal here she became a member of the First Presbyterian church, and as long as her health permitted was a regular attendant at divine service and a zealous worker for the church. She was an everyday Christian and the beautifying influence of a pure religion were spread over a life and character pure and without spot.

Among us all she ranked always as a woman of culture, refinement and sympathy, a kind neighbor, devoted mother and true friend.

SUBMITTER’S NOTE: Mrs. A. E. MARTIN was born Mary Maria ELLISON on 10 Sep 1839 in Yorkshire , England . Her parents were Walker ELLISON and Margaret COOPER. Her brother’s name was Benjamin Walker ELLISON. After Mary’s first husband, James J. DAWSON, died in Ohio , she married her late half-sister’s husband, Enoch Kimball ROBINSON. After his death she married a third and last time to Arthur E. MARTIN.
